A pad is the same carbonless set, glued at the head without the wraparound cover and backing board. Cheaper per set, and the right choice when the pad lives on a counter or a desk rather than in a van.

Neither is better. It depends on where the paperwork is filled in and whether it has to survive being carried around.
| NCR pad | NCR book | |
|---|---|---|
| Cover | None — glued head only | Wraparound cover with backing board |
| Writing shield | Not usually included | Included, prevents marking sets below |
| Best for | Counter, reception and office use | On site, in a van, out on the road |
| Cost per set | Lower | Higher, because of the finishing |
| Numbering | Available | Available |
| Perforation | Available | Available |
Some jobs want the sets loose — for a printer tray, a franking run or a folder rather than a pad.
Collated in the right colour order and boxed, ready to be filed, fed or bound however you need them.
Sequential numbering across the run so the sets stay traceable even without a book to hold them.
Perforated before padding so the customer copy tears away cleanly on any part you specify.
